1963 is often looked at as the last year of classic Rock 'n Roll. Elvis had given way to the popularity of "The Girl Groups" as had Chubby Checker and the Twist and The Stroll to the Fruge and the Pony, they were still popular. Folk music became mainstream in 1963. The Beatles were enjoying overseas popularity but the group that would change the Pop music scene in America was a year away. The one style that reflects 1963 is the wonderfully crafted music of the 'Girl Groups' such as the Ronnettes, The Shirelles, The Crystals, The Chiffons and the Dixie Cups. These groups where in full stride in 1963. Male groups such as the Drifters and The Temptations similarly enjoyed great popularity and early Motown Soul with James Brown was emerging along with that of newly popular Folk scene and along with Jazz. 1963 was a fabulous year to enjoy music on the radio on a 45, an LP and at a concert.
Our pop music was about boys and girls in love. It was danceable, it had a great beat and it was happy. Truly 'feel good' music.
Please visit the Music of 1963 or turn on the old record player to return with me to a Saturday Night in October at the beginning of our Senior Year.

The Movies were our most popular entertainment attraction on Saturday Night in 1963 weather it was in the theater or on Million Dollar Movie on the TV . Movies were Hollywood; a wonderful distant place were fantasy and reality seemed the become one. For a coule of hours in the dark we could hold our girlfriend's hand and wonder what they were thinking while we watched what was happeneing on the screen in front of us. We were learning to be adults. For many of us, it was real romance as we were experiencing our first loves. We were on our own, escaping our own real worlds for that evening.
We watched black and white movies. We watched color movies we had double features... two movies for the price of one...Imagine! We also enjoyed wide screen "Cinemascope" productions that were and still are epic productions. Some movies were very funny, Others were very moving or ramantic. Some others were just awful, but we always enjoyed The Movies.
Return with me on a Saturday night so many years ago for a date at The Movies.
