When Planning the 2006 Cruise Reunion, Creating the Legend of Queen Neptuna was a great deal of fun. Having been initiated as a golden Shellback during my service years. I thought it would be fun to create our own version of the Legend of King Neptune and the Ceremony associated with initiating new shipmates when Crossing the Line (crossing the equator).

Kathy and I did not think long nor hard on who should be our Queen Neptuna. It had to be Marianne Schiralli. No other single activity was as well documented and supported as The Legend of Queen Neptuna.

From my Navy background I knew our Queen needed both a letter of authority and we needed a story to underpin what would transpire next.

So at cocktails on Friday evening, our first evening aboard, the waitress at the lounge where we gathered presented Marianne with her letter from King Neptune requesting her to fill in for him for the cruise. Next we crowned Marianne with a tastfully illuminated tiara and presented her with her trident, a symbol of her reign while at sea. Also a neat pink ballcap with Queen Neptuna embroidered on the front.

HRM Queen Neptuna of the Briny Deep

Polywogs Singing Gilligan's Island Theme

After we all read "Queen Neptuna Legend", I, acting as Davy Jones, Clerk to Her Royal Majesty, gave her a stack of "Subpoena and Summons Extraordinary from the Royal High Court of the Briny Deep" which when completed by HRM, I would include in the next morning's Captain's Call package under our shipmates cabin doors. The slimy polywogs were to be summoned to HRM High Court were they would be judged worthy after completing their punishment. In order to give HRM a few options for penalties and punishments that could be delt out, we prepared "Queen Neptuna's Punishments, Penalties and Sing Along Song Book" After our formal Captain's invitation Dinner on our second day out, HRM held her High Court in one of the ship's lounges where the polywogs all sang togther as their group punishment as commanded by HRM, the theme song from Gilligan's Island. Amazed onlookers gathered at the door of the lounge to listen to this unique entertainment offering.

The Queen Neptuna Lengend will live on and on. A very special initiation for this very special group of Mustangs.
