Columbia River Gorge and Mount Hood - Two Days

After our Not-a-Reunion in Portland you can chose to move eastward along the Historic Columbia River Parkway for two additional days at the Skamania Lodge on the Washington side of the Columbia River.

Columbia River Highway

The seventy mile long Historic Columbia River Highway is one of the most beautiful senic highways to be found in the country. Built between 1913 and 1920 and designed to be a senic roadway. It runs alongside Interstate 84. Even though it will take you to the same places as the interstate the journey is so very different. On our way to the Skamia Lodge leave I84 at troutdale and drive the rest of the way on the Historic Columbia River Highway. the views and stops along the way are your reward for taking the road less traveled.

Mount Hood and Timberline Lodge

The drive south toward Mount Hood is scenic and a visit to the famous Timberline Lodge is memorable. A visit to the lodge should include a lunch at one of the fine restaurants. The historic hotel was built between 1936 - 1938 by the Works Progress Administration during the Great Depression. Built by Gilbert Stanley Underwood famous for his lodges in the National Parks System. The decoration in the lodge is unique much is still orginal. This is a "must see" place if you are able to visit.
