QB Rollie Stichweh scores touchdown in 1963 Army vs Navy Football Game

Two yards and the clock... The pain still reasonates as I sat that afternoon in our home watching the 1963 Army vs Navy game... just another second or two and Army would have pullled off the biggest upset of that football season. But history had already been made. The entire country now knew what we had always known; just how good Rollie Stichweh was as a football player and leader. The best quarterback on the field that day was not the Heisman Award Winner Staubach from Navy but Army's and Mineola's Rollie Stichweh.

The match-up of college quarterbacks Roger Staubuck (Navy) and Rollie Stichweh (Army) made for some of college football's greatest drama during the 1963 and 1964 seasons.

Rollie Stichweh quarterbacked our MHS football teams to two undefeated seasons, a Rutgers Cup and won the Thorp Award emblematic of Nassau County's top high school football player. Rollie went on to the USMA at West Point were he started at quarterback for the 1963 and 1964 football seasons. Importantly for me Rollie also went on to serve in the elite 173rd Airborne Brigade in Vietnam. Now retired living in Connectitcut Rollie and Carole (Burmann MHS '61) are enjoying all the action with their grandchildren.

Rollie will be inducted into The Army Sports Hall of Fame on September 28, 2012. All of us that had the privilege of being teammates or watching Rollie play will enjoy attending this event at West Point.

It will be a wonderful day. For more information see the link below.
